Mission & Origin

QAI drives economic growth in British Columbia by fostering a skilled quantum workforce, supporting commercialization of quantum research, and building a thriving industry. By leveraging BC’s strengths, QAI cultivates an inclusive quantum ecosystem that promotes innovation, job creation, and long-term economic development in the province and across Canada.

OUR MISSION

British Columbia has long been at the forefront of quantum innovation, driven by a strong foundation in research, education, and industry leadership. In 2018 and 2019, the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development, and Innovation identified quantum computing as a key opportunity for economic growth, recognizing the province’s deep expertise in the field.

BC has been home to major quantum milestones, including the founding of D-Wave (1999), the world’s first quantum computing company; 1QBit (2012), the first dedicated quantum software company; and Photonic Inc. (2016), Canada’s fastest-growing quantum computing firm. These companies, alongside leading academic institutions, have helped establish BC as a global hub for quantum research and commercialization.

Today, with increasing global investments, national quantum strategies, and fierce competition for quantum talent, BC’s early leadership in quantum computing, networking, and algorithm development has positioned the province as a key player in shaping the future of this transformative industry.
